Job Description – Head Cook

 

Reports To: Director

 

Job Summary:

To ensure the provision of adequate food for all campers and staff during the regular camp season and to effectively operate the Camp Kitchen and manage all Kitchen Staff.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Food Handlers’ certification
  • Camp cooking and food preparation experience
  • Ability and willingness to work in large scale cooking
  • Proven cooking and administrative skills
  • Knowledge of health, safety and nutrition standards
  • Ability to constantly take initiative and be a self-starter who is well organized
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to organize, motivate and supervise others
  • Ability to coordinate work groups in an effort to maximize the effectiveness of the Kitchen Staff
  • Ability to take the lead in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to encourage and challenge team members
  • Ability to constructively evaluate members of kitchen team
  • Ability to remain calm in high pressure situations
  • Desire and ability to work in a camp community
  • Ability to sustain the physical demands of a residential camp setting
  • Flourishing relationship with the Lord
  • Ability to positively influence, motivate and instruct children spiritually, emotionally, socially and intellectually. Positive approaches to problem solving are a critical skill to teach and uphold.
  • We require absolute confidentiality regarding campers, as well as personal and professional integrity in matters of relationship, programs and work ethic. 
  • A staff person’s lifestyle must be consistent with biblical standards and Christian values at all times.
  • To work within and support The Scott Mission’s Christian Statement of Faith, Goals and Objectives
  • Satisfactory completion of the Staff Security Clearance Process.

 

Major Duties:

  1. Menu Preparation:  The Head Cook will prepared the Camp Menu prior to the start of the camp season and the required food and equipment will be ordered and put in place by the start of the first session. The Head Cook will regularly monitor supplies and food quantities and place orders to ensure the adequate provision of food for the entire camp population.
  2. Ordering:  The Head Cook will place food, supply and equipment orders in conjunction with the Camp Director.
  3. Food Preparation:  The Head Cook will ensure that all work in the kitchen is conducted in accordance with the guidelines supplied by the local community department of health.
  4. Kitchen Maintenance: The Head Cook will ensure the regular maintenance of the kitchen area and equipment including all counters, fridges, freezers, stoves, ovens, equipment and pantry areas.
  5. Staff Supervision:  Cooking and Kitchen Assistants will be regularly monitored by the Head Cook to ensure that all responsibilities are being carried out in accordance with expectations and health regulations. 
  6. Staff Evaluation: Cooking and Kitchen Assistants will be evaluated twice throughout the summer by the Head Cook, given constructive feedback based on their performance in the kitchen and within the team setting.
  7. Staff Supervision:  Cooking and Kitchen Assistants will be regularly monitored by the Head Cook to ensure that all responsibilities are being carried out in accordance with expectations and health regulations. 
  8. Staff Evaluation: Cooking and Kitchen Assistants will be evaluated twice throughout the summer by the Head Cook, given constructive feedback based on their performance in the kitchen and within the team setting.
