Refugee Hearing Program Assistant

Matthew House is a Christian-based shelter for newly arrived refugee claimants located in downtown Toronto. Using three homes Matthew House provides temporary shelter and assistance to 30 refugee claimants at any given time who would otherwise be homeless. Over 1400 refugees from 98 countries have been supported by the Matthew House community.


Time Commitment: 40 hours per week    

 Remuneration: $12.25/hour.

Contract Length: 12 Weeks

Starting Date: 5 June 2017

Application Deadline: 23 May 2017

Objective:  To support the implementation of the Mock Refugee Hearing Program.


The applicant must meet the following requirements:

·        Be a student returning to full-time studies in September, 2017

·        Aged between 18-30 years

·        Legally authorized to work in Canada

·        Not working 30 hrs or more per week at another job

·        Committed to uphold Matthew House’s values and standards



·        Students who are members of visible minority groups, students with disabilities or Aboriginal students will have priority in the selection process.

·        Self-motivated and driven

·        Knowledge of Canada’s refugee system and/or experience with newcomers an asset

·        Organized, reliable, displays integrity, good communicator, a team player


Key Responsibilities:

The incumbent will assist refugee mock hearing activities process by, among others activities:

·        Scheduling mock hearing sessions, preparing the venue and preparing documents

·        Provide support at the mock hearing sessions

·        Confirming attendance of the mock hearing by the key players including refugee claimants, lawyers, and law students

·        Preparing mock hearing training room and organizing the training logistics

·        Supporting the refugee partner agencies participating in the Program

·        Providing clerical and administrative support to the overall Program

·        Research immigration and refugee issues for information purposes

·        Collect data on the implementation of the Program

·        Developing simple templates, checklists and rosters for specified Program activities



·        Knowledge of another language besides English (Spanish, French, Dari, Tigrigna, Amharic, Arabic, etc) is an asset

·        The following fields of studies are assets; Social Work, Refugee Studies, Refugee Law, International Development Studies, Management, Human Right and Equity
