Refugee Settlement Assistant

Matthew House is a Christian-based shelter for newly arrived refugee claimants located in downtown Toronto. Using three homes Matthew House provides temporary shelter and assistance to at least 30 refugee claimants at any given time who would otherwise be homeless. Over 1400 refugees from 98 countries have been supported by the Matthew House community.

Time Commitment: 40 hours per week

Remuneration: $12.25/hour

Contract Length: 12 weeks

Starting Date: 05 June 2017

Assist in the reception, settlement and community re-integration of the newly arrived refugee claimants.


The applicant must meet the following requirements:

·        Be a student returning to full-time studies in September, 2017 * (excluding foreign students)

·        Aged between 18-30 years

·        Legally authorized to work in Canada

·        Not working 30 hrs or more per week at another job

·        Committed to uphold Matthew House’s values and standards


·        Students who are members of visible minority groups, students with disabilities or Aboriginal students will have priority in the selection process.

·        Self-motivated and driven

·        Knowledge of Canada’s refugee system and/or experience with newcomers an asset

·        Organized, reliable, displays integrity, good communicator, a team player

Key Responsibilities:

The incumbent will assist the residents’ settlement process in ways including the following:

·        Residents’ admission and intake processes

·        Referral of the residents to settlement services

·        Residents refugee claim process and accompanying to appointments as required

·        Delivering residents’ orientation sessions

·        Managing the office/shelter over the weekend

·        Finding opportunities for volunteer placement, housing, education/ training and employment

·        Community reintegration

·        Preparing application for permits (work and study) and renewal of documents;

·        Collaborating with Home Coordinator to ensure that the house is organized and that meals are served

·        Coordinating occasional weekend outings or special activities

·        Smooth running of the house during weekend shifts

·        Providing administrative and clerical assistance to the residents as needed

·        Supporting summer camp when scheduled


·        Knowledge of another language besides English (Spanish, French, Dari, Tigrigna, Amharic, Arabic, etc is an asset

·        The following fields of studies are assets; Social Work, Refugee Studies, Refugee Law, International Development Studies, Management, Human Right and Equity.
