Position Description

The Yonge Street Mission is a Christian faith-based charity called to demonstrate God’s love, peace and justice to those living with economic, social and spiritual poverty in Toronto.


Reporting to the Mission Operations Officer the Director of Community Development will:

  • Targeting Toronto’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas, the Director of Community Development will provide excellent direction and supervision to a team of staff working to achieve YSM’s aims in empowering community members and community groups to overcome their challenges. Specific areas of impact are: wealth creation, social cohesion, system navigation and community ownership/engagement.
  • Represent YSM at leadership and multi-stakeholder tables that are aligned with the outcomes sought by the Community Development department.  Representation at these tables will embody the biblical foundations and values of YSM while building trust, overcoming obstacles, modeling communication that builds unity, and achieves substantial gains through providing leadership for evolving methodologies and the embracing of collaborative best-practices by stakeholders and regional agencies.
  • Provide ongoing experience-based knowledge into an evolving philosophy of community development for YSM.


The successful candidate will have and be able to demonstrate skills in the following:

  • Deep knowledge of asset-based community development
  • A flexible, accepting stance towards people, groups and agencies (e.g. sensitivity to other religions, issues of racism/oppression, inter-agency dynamics)
  • Strong leadership as an influencer
  • Excellent team leadership and team building
  • Strategic thinking
  • Knowledge of social sector and global and local community development practice
  • Passion for coaching at team and team member level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Knowledge of intercultural dynamics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong planning ability
  • Knowledge of business development an asset
  • Multiple languages an asset
  • A vulnerable population police check will be required / First aid training is an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to YSM’s principles of faith, mission and values
