Position Description

Job purpose

• Responsible for planning and leading the congregation in worshiping God wholeheartedly during the contemporary Sunday morning worship services.

Duties and responsibilities

• Contribute to the planning of the Contemporary Worship Service and Family Sunday Worship Services along with the Senior (Lead) Pastor, Traditional Service Worship Planning Leader, Family and Young Adult Pastor, and Children and Youth Pastor as required.
• Selection of appropriate music for the morning service.
• Ensure there is a worship band each week while maintaining a rotation of musicians from a provided list of musicians and vocalists.
• Recruit contemporary worship team members in conjunction with the Worship Ministry Team.
• Distribution of music to worship team members via e-mail.
• Reviewing Proclaim PowerPoint slides to make sure they match the music and words being played / sung. This is on the cloud enabling it to be done from home.
• Setup for the Contemporary Service including Proclaim software start up.
• Lead rehearsals.
• Lead the worship portion of the service including prayer in conjunction with the pastoral staff, music and words of encouragement between songs.
• Facilitate communication should there ever be any conflict among team members on the morning of a service. If happening at other times the Worship Ministry Leadership and Ministry Committee of Session would assist in conflict resolution.
• Apprentice a Contemporary Worship Planning Leader who can act as a backup in case of illness or vacation.


• Belief and Statement of Apostolic Christian Faith.
• A passion for worshiping God.
• Following of Cheyne Presbyterian Church Commitment of faith form which includes Statement of Faith, Commitment to Following Christ, Cheyne's Covenant of Community, The Covenant of Care and Leading With Care.
• Possess ability to lead prayer and be an encourager for the congregation.
• Ability to lead enthusiastically public worship services welcoming congregants at beginning of service, introducing music and encouraging congregation to go for fellowship downstairs following the service.
• Be a confident and dynamic leader of the congregation in worship.
• Have the ability to sing well and with strong projection.
• Ability to play a musical instrument preferred.
• The leader needs to know how to lead a musical group. They need to know the different instruments and musical terminology so that they lead, correct, and help the musicians and singers reach their potential and to play well together as a unified team.
• Available to lead worship on Sunday mornings and during other times as required such as Good Friday, Easter Sunday and during Christmas Services.
• Leadership – The ability to lead a team of vocalists and musicians in Christian worship, recruit and develop volunteers encouraging and coaching them.
• Administration and Organization skills.
• Good knowledge of music and current Christian musical tastes.
• Computer savvy.
• Ability to work within a team.

Working conditions

Incumbent must be able to lead worship in a public setting. Position requires incumbent have time to prepare for each week’s service from planning, through set-up, rehearsal and execution of the contemporary musical portion of the Sunday morning contemporary worship service.
