Position Description

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Responsibilities and Key Duties:

  • Support clients; register, check-in, monitor, assess behaviour, progress and overall well-being
  • Advocate for clients needs, making referrals to and collaborating with appropriate resources and community organizations
  • Work with clients to build planning and life skills
  • Orient new arrivals to shelter protocols and policies
  • Observe and assess agitation levels in order to proactively defuse potentially aggressive situations
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team liaising with others to promote a supportive environment
  • Ensure flow of critical information including documentation and shift change to bring forward issues and occurrences that take place while on shift
  • Promote a supportive environment that values the contributions of staff, volunteers and clients
  • Perform day-to-day administrative duties including maintaining database, answering telephone and email inquiries, client intakes and assisting other staff with completing paperwork left unfinished
  • Effectively de-escalate, diffuse, and monitor overall shelter environment for safety
  • Ensure or assist in meal preparation
  • Contribute to the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the shelter
  • Assign and monitor completion of daily chores with clients
  • Maintain inventory of supplies for shelter and that the needs for donations are reported
  • Maintain program and client confidentiality, including former clients
  • Document and respond to critical incidents according to policy
  • Document all visitors, including vendors and volunteers, in daily log
  • Complete all shelter forms, logs and records accurately and timely
  • Focus on building relationships with clients; this includes but is not limited to meeting basic needs, identifying additional needs based on their current situation, being available to answer questions, and assisting with problem solving, while demonstrating empathy and acceptance

Other Duties as Assigned


  • Experience working with at-risk people in a similar working environment
  • Current valid first-aid certificate
  • Current valid CPR certificate
  • Bondable and free of a criminal record
  • Training in crisis intervention is preferred
  • Diploma of social work, mental health, or addictions preferred
  • Candidates must have flexibility in working hours, including on-call availability and the willingness to work holidays as they coincide with regular shifts

Wage: $16 an hour
