Senior Pastor Job Description

Avenue Road Baptist Church is affiliated with Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec. With a Sunday congregation of 100-110, in good facilities at the edge of the city, we’re next door to some of the wealthiest communities while only a short walk from some of the poorest. We’re also an older congregation that has faced the need to change and become relevant in evangelism and service.


Key Ministry Expectations

Leading public worship and prayer times
Having full commitment to the necessity of personal salvation and the authority and inspiration of the Bible

Developing a strong teaching, preaching, and personal ministry that leads us out into impacting our community with the gospel in a relevant and sensitive manner
Providing pastoral care & counsel, and developing co-labourers in the congregation to help shoulder the load
Being committed to both personal and corporate prayer
Working together with the church leadership in planning and establishing the vision and direction of both the overall ministry of the church as well as that of internal groups and initiatives
Sensitively guiding the development of our worship services to more contemporary forms


Other Expectations

Manage administrative aspects of the church and provide direction and supervision to the staff
Develop and train leaders
Participate in scheduled meetings with church boards
Prepare worship services in consultation with other church leaders
Represent the church at association meetings and pastor/denominational conferences.
Conduct weddings, funerals, baptisms and child dedications as requested within church policy.



Personal: Our Pastor should reflect the qualities found in: 1Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-9.

Denominational: Initial preference will be given to those from within the Canadian Baptist Federation, but all with a baptistic and congregational understanding of church ministry are very welcome to apply.

Ordination: Prefer current ordination within the Canadian Baptist Federation but we are willing to work with candidates who will be able to seek accreditation and ordination within the CBOQ
Education: Prefer an M.Div. (or equivalent) but experience and alternate training will be considered
Experience:  Sufficient experience to understand and both work within and develop the practices, polity, and relationships of a local church.

Candidating Process

Applications will be received in batches that will be reviewed monthly. Candidates will submit an introductory letter, a resume, and a brief statement of their philosophy of ministry.
The search will continue until we believe that the right individual is found.
Application deadline dates: Initial - October 1st.   If no appropriate candidates are found, the second deadline will be October 31st.

Selected applicants will be asked to respond to a number of questions. 
From these responses, candidates may be offered a personal/skype/telephone interview. 
It is assumed that a more intensive relationship will then be developed with a preferred candidate.

Goal: To have a new pastor in place by the beginning of 2019 although we may wait for the right person.
