Position Description

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services - food, clothing and housing, and support services – education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta.

Position Summary

As a member of the Basic Services team, this staff person will have a broad working knowledge of all areas of The Mustard Seed’s services. This position will support the activities of the following initiatives: The Food Depot, Street Level, Personal Assistance Centre (PAC) and Housing. Reporting to the Street Level Supervisors, the Relief Support Worker is a front-line staff member that responds to the needs of The Mustard Seed community participants on an ongoing basis.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fulfill the mission and values of The Mustard Seed and maintain a high level of professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community members and visitors
  • Ensure services are delivered in a respectful and safe environment while enforcing facilities rules, expected code of conduct, and building cleanliness at all TMS facilities
  • Model healthy relationships with community participants and volunteers by listening, counseling, praying, and referring
  • Communicate issues and concerns to supervisors in a proactive respectful manner
  • Maintain specific records, stats and incident reports on log books and computer files and maintain proper radio communication at all TMS facilities
  • Brief, de-brief and pray with both staff and volunteer groups when necessary
  • Ensure daily tidiness and cleanliness of work area
  • Participate in all staff training and attend monthly general meetings
  • Other duties and site related duties may be assigned when required

Specific Location

At Church (96 street), Mosaic Centre (Fort Road) and Neighbour Centre Street Level (Gateway Blvd)

  • Create a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for the Drop-in at our 3 locations.
  • Work with community participants to encourage positive changes in lifestyle and behavior through positive day -to-day interactions
  • Foster meaningful relationships with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers and community participants
  • Assist community participants to access The Mustard Seed services available in the Drop-In programs and activities
  • Provide a strong foundation for the community by upholding boundaries and rules; respond quickly to individuals in crisis, minimize the harm to the individual and others, use de - escalation skills and assist the individual to explore options and seek restorative justice

In the Personal Assistance Centre and in the Food Depot

  • Support the Coordinator in facilitating programs and implementation of policy and procedures
  • Support the daily operations of the specific program and in some cases while supervising volunteers
  • Supervise the filling and organization of the display cases and space available
  • Receive stock, organize storeroom, fill and distribute hampers
  • Conduct administrative duties as assigned by your supervisor

In Housing

  • Work directly with residents in permanent supportive housing by providing care
  • Work closely with Housing Support Workers to provide critical information on client care and support through accurate ETO data input and maintenance of client records
  • Maintain the safety and security of the housing environment
  • Respond to crises in a professional, calm, and supportive manner
  • Weekend shifts are 12 hours long which potentially can be divided into 6 hour segments

Reception at CSC and Mosaic Centre

  • Ensure the welcoming and professional reception of people who contact The Mustard Seed by telephone, in person or by email; ensure first contact with clients, potential volunteers visitors and donors is positive
  • Facilitate communication within The Mustard Seed by directing phone calls to appropriate persons and coordinating the efficient distribution of phone messages, mail, faxes and emails
  • Provide administrative support to The Mustard Seed in all areas of the ministry and written communications such as letters, notices and newsletters, spreadsheets
  • Maintain the company database by creating and updating files  for consistency and accuracy, and provide administrative support to administration department as requested
  • Maintain a clean, organized and welcoming reception area and office space
  • Assist in the preparation of weekly courier package to be sent to Alberta office for processing

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate
  • A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness in Alberta is essential
  • Organizational skill and ability to carry all and delivery of front line programs
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills
  • A proactive and self-starter individual
  • A team player, who works collaboratively and has a ‘teachable spirit’ 
  • Good knowledge of data base entry (ETO, MS Word and Excel) is required
  • Ability to work independently and in a cross-functional team
  • Integrity, discretion and tact dealing with confidential matters
  • Knowledge of mental illness and addictions is an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid certification is strongly desired
  • Experience working in a fast pace environment

Other Information

  • This is a relief casual position and hours will vary from week to week. No guaranteed minimum hours
  • Days, evenings, weekends, overnight and stat holidays shifts are required and on short notice
  • The position will require ongoing compassionate care, frequent manual labor, conflict resolution and organizational ability while working directly with risk population in life recovery
  • This position is often fast-paced, and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
  • Moderate physical effort with considerable periods of standing, walking and siting, indoors and outdoors
  • Vulnerable Sector Check and Employment Security Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
