Position Description

Who are we?

The Mustard Seed is a Christian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. We partner with the community to address the root causes of poverty and to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services, housing, and employment supports to those living in poverty across Alberta and British Columbia.

What can you expect?

You will work at The Mustard Seed’s Mosaic Centre (MC) and/or Neighbour Centre (TNC) locations. Build healthy and supportive relationships with our community participants experiencing homelessness and poverty. Assist community participants in accessing resources and services, maintain a safe, welcoming environment where people come together for hope, health, and transformation at an hourly wage of $17-19.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fulfill the mission of The Mustard Seed’s ministry and maintain a high level of professionalism, respect, and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community participants and visitors
  • Ensure a safe, welcoming atmosphere. Cultivate a community where participants – those experiencing poverty as well as those serving as staff or volunteers – work together to realize their full potential
  • Build healthy relationships with community participants who are accessing services by actively listening, providing resources and referrals, de-escalating conflict, maintaining healthy boundaries, and seeking opportunities for involvement and engagement
  • Function in high-pressure situations and respond quickly to individuals in crisis. Identify crisis, minimize harm to individuals and others, use de-escalation skills, and assist individuals to explore options or resolution
  • Problem solve, support and empower fellow staff members, and proactively communicate issues or concerns to Shift Lead
  • Assure the availability and quality of Centre resources and services
  • Assure the cleanliness and order of Centre
  • Maintain the confidentiality of community participants personal information
  • Maintain specific records, stats, and incident reports in log books and computer files
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, Naloxone, Non-violence, etc.) and attend monthly general meetings and support meetings with supervisor
  • Other duties may be assigned when required

What do we need from you?

Awareness of the complex issues contributing to poverty. This can be shown in the following ways:

  • Minimum of one year related experience working with individuals facing mental health, addictions, chronic illness, homelessness, poverty, and related challenges. Equivalent experience will be considered
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma, or experience in human services field with a background in social work, counseling, or addictions an asset
  • Multi-Tasker - manage multiple tasks at once and troubleshoot any problems that come your way
  • Communicator - you clearly and effectively communicate with others
  • Interpersonal skills - you’re a people person and you’re not afraid to show it
  • Result oriented – you get the job done and on time
  • Excellent de-escalation and conflict resolution skills to work towards win-win situations
  • Highly motivated, compassionate, creative and responsible person
  • First Aid, Non-violent Crisis Intervention, and Suicide Intervention Training is an asset
  • Familiarity with data entry, Excel, Outlook, and the ability to respond to emails in a timely manner
  • Other duties may be assigned when required

Other things to keep in mind:

  • This is a temporary part-time, hourly position from November 2018 to April 2019
  • Shifts may vary (i.e. mornings, afternoons & evenings from Monday to Sunday, indoors and outdoors)
  • Employment Security Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
