Position Description

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Shelter Team Lead, the Shelter Evening Support Worker works closely with Mustard Seed guests accessing the shelter mat program, encouraging them in their journey and directing them to Mustard Seed programs and services.  The Support Staff fulfills the mission of The Mustard Seed’s Ministry by maintaining a high level of professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, community participants and visitors. Shelter Evening Support Workers respond to guest needs on an ongoing basis and ensure they are supported and cared for. Crisis intervention and conflict resolution are daily occurrences for this role. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • As the first point of contact for guests seeking shelter, support the dignity of our guests by seeking to identify their needs in a respectful manner
  • Encourage and assist guests to seek resources and services that support guests in achieving their goals
  • Be a supportive and proactive team-mate to fellow support staff and volunteers
  • Provide person centered support and care to guests in a flexible way which meets their needs
  • Use initiative to assess situations and make appropriate decisions to support guests
  • Provide and maintain a safe, clean environment for respite, for up to 40 adult guests
  • Manage conflict and provide crisis intervention as required
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, SafeTALK, Nonviolence) and attend regular general meetings and support meetings with supervisor
  • Collect data and maintain accurate records, including incident reports
  • Respect proper boundaries with guests
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • 1 year of experience working with a marginalized population
  • Experience working within the culture of the inner city and/or with the less fortunate
  • A demonstrated passion to be involved in ending homelessness in Alberta is essential
  • Follow organizational protocols of front line programs to completion
  • Able to multi-task and demonstrate organizational skills with shifting priorities
  • Experience working in a volunteer-based organization is considered an asset
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and conflict resolution skills
  • Customer service experience an asset
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team
  • Desire to serve in a Christian street ministry
  • Strong desire to work with a marginalized and vulnerable population

Working Conditions

  • This is a Part-time fixed-term position with an end date of April 30, 2019
  • Shifts are 10 hour-long, awake shifts, scheduled from 9pm to 7am on a 2 on/2 off rotation
  • This position is fast-paced and requires moderate amount of mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
  • This position requires the training and use of two-way radio communications and MS Office based programs
