Position Description

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Managing Director—Central Alberta, the Manager of Clinical Operations and Programs leads a multidisciplinary team that supports The Mustard Seed clients who are experiencing barriers—resulting in chronic homelessness and/or increased utilization of emergency health services— to pursue meaningful life change. The Manager is responsible for and oversees Health & Wellness, Street Level, overnight Shelter and Employment which includes building Christ-centred teams consisting of staff, volunteers and students across each program area.  The Manager of Clinical Operations and Programs will oversee the creation and execution of programs across the aforementioned departments which will aim to ensure people experiencing poverty and homelessness have their basic needs met. Additionally, in consultation with the Managing Director, will create programming and services, oversee the development of the Red Deer Wellness Centre including professional partnerships, and when operational will manage staff. The Manager will also be a key stakeholder when The Mustard Seed Red Deer pursues affordable housing in the region.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide project leadership to start a Wellness Centre in Red Deer
  • Plan and organize activities related to specified clinical services to ensure client needs are met in accordance with professional standards of professional care and facility administrative procedures
  • Coordinate activities with other departments, client care programs, third party agencies, client’s support systems, law enforcement officers, the media, and other health facilities
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate methods to ensure effective and efficient use of staff, facilities, equipment, and other resources while maintaining client care standards
  • Encourage clients to access mental health supports both in the community and in The Mustard Seed aiming to receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment in consultation with community health partners
  • Manage programs by tracking, reporting, and evaluating statistics
  • Build an effective staff or team by providing credible leadership and ensuring programs follow Mustard Seed strategy, policy, and practices
  • Support the involvement of volunteers by providing appropriate and meaningful holistic healthcare and programming
  • Actively recruit third party and practicum placements to fill appropriate positions within The Mustard Seed
  • Prepare annual management plans and manage budgets, contracts, review and report as required
  • Participate in applicable organization-wide committees to ensure that Central Alberta is represented among the other regions The Mustard Seed is located
  • Collaborate with the Director of Strategic Initiatives  and counterparts in other regions to share strengths

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • A passion to be part of ending homelessness and poverty in Canada
  • Post-graduate degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work, or related field
  • Minimum five years’ experience working in mental health, addictions or homelessness
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate with members of the multidisciplinary team and community agencies
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior leadership role, preferably in a not-for-profit or social enterprise environment
  • Experience in strategic planning, program evaluation, and program development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Alberta’s community (mental) health and addiction resources, and adept in navigating those systems
  • Knowledge of FOIP and HIA
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Programs)
  • Experience with Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), ETO (Efforts to Outcome) and HIFIS systems considered an asset
  • Superior organizational, time management and advocacy skills

Other Information

  • This is a permanent part-time position consisting of 3 days a week, 24 hours per week; days and hours to be determined
  • Time in excess of regular working hours may be required on occasion to meet the overall needs of the operation and to attend to crisis situations
  • Some travel will be required, specifically to partnering organization and between Mustard Seed sites
