Position Description

Volunteers are essential to the services Inner Hope provides to inner city youth and families. We rely on the leadership of a stellar Volunteer Coordinator to steward our people-resources well. To maintain the integrity of our organization, and offer the best possible service to a diverse community, we must apply proper care into screening, training, and supporting our volunteers. This part-time position is focused on recruiting, empowering, and supporting volunteers who are passionate about investing in East Vancouver youth and families.

You are an engaging and affirming relationship-builder who can help others catch a vision, and then nurture their commitment long-term. You are personable and empathetic, comfortable relating to others one-on-one, in groups, and in public presentation settings. Your energy and focused attention will keep our loyal volunteers engaged at all stages of their experience with Inner Hope Youth Ministries. And you’re detail-oriented enough to keep the machine running! Above all, you are a person of integrity and passion for Christian ministry—your servant leadership models the standard we expect from our volunteers.

Start Date: March 2019 (date negotiable)
Hours: 15 hours/week; some evening and weekend flex time will be required
Remuneration: $20 per hour (cell phone & laptop provided for work purposes)
Responsible to: Director of Programs (Diana Squires)

Position Requirements:

  • Passionate understanding of IHYM’s Vision, Mission and Values
  • Experience and ability to partner with, supervise, and mentor volunteers
  • Proven ability to engage and inspire adults – the position includes recruitment, public speaking, event hosting, and nurturing relationships to maintain a committed volunteer team
  • Minimum five years of combined post-secondary education/workforce experience
  • Minimum two years of experience working in a non-profit or Christian ministry setting
  • Knowledge and understanding of inner-city youth and families and/or Indigenous culture (applies to 90% of the families we serve)
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Proven ability to communicate at a professional level (both verbal and written)
  • Competence in time management and administration, with the ability to be flexible
  • The character, maturity, and communication skills needed to relate to volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds
  • Acceptable current criminal record check
  • Adherence to IHYM’s Statement of Faith and Code of Ethics
  • Class 5 (or higher) driver’s license and vehicle (work-related mileage is reimbursed)

Primary Responsibilities:

Volunteer recruitment and screening

  • Network and/or present in public settings
  • Help prospective volunteers discern their best fit within Inner Hope’s programs
  • Screen and exit volunteers (forms, interviews)
  • Diligently oversee filing and upkeep of volunteer records

Volunteer training and care

  • Conduct initial orientation, training, and provision of resources
  • Coordinate and facilitate semi-annual volunteer training workshops
  • Oversee volunteer support and appreciation

Maintain records

  • Oversee volunteer budget
  • Provide monthly and annual reports to supervisor


  • Produce volunteer e-newsletters
  • Coordinate volunteer assignments through proactive day-to-day communication
  • Collaborate with program staff to discern and meet their volunteer needs
  • Troubleshoot any performance issues which may require equipping and/or correction
