Position Description

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

The Mustard Seed’s Street Level Intern will foster a Christ–centered understanding of poverty and homelessness to transform worldviews and mobilize the community.  The purpose of the Street Level Intern is to support the staff and the community participants in creating a space where all are welcome, safety and supports are offered and meaningful activities and community involvement are encouraged.

The Street Level Summer Student will be part of the Street Level team being the first point of contact with Mustard Seed Guests, donors, and volunteers at The Mustard Seed Red Deer. Reporting to the Street Level Supervisor, the Street Level Intern will interact and assist Guests in locating and accessing appropriate Mustard Seed resources; document Guest interactions for the purpose of advocacy; assist and direct volunteers as needed; greet donors and thankfully receive/document donations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise building access, the receipt of donations
  • Build strong relationships with our clients (guests) and encourage them to access programs & services at The Mustard Seed and at other service providers in Central Alberta
  • Monitor guest activities within the Red Deer location, providing program information, and crisis intervention as required
  • Providing an enhanced visible presence throughout the Campus, perceiving and responding to opportunities that will  optimize safety, and build community
  • Greet and ensure donors and volunteers are treated with excellence and appreciation
  • Attend meetings and training as assigned
  • Keep all client information confidential
  • Each student will have a side project that coincides with regular duties. One student will have a Spiritual Care project and the other will have a Fund Development project.
  • Other duties as assigned        

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be currently enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program and fully intending to return to full-time studies in the fall of 2019
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • Volunteer experience an asset
  • Ministry experience an asset
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail
  • A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross functional team
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to thrive and deliver results in a fast paced environment

Other Information

  • This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week for 16 weeks: May 7, 2019 – August 20, 2019
  • Working both inside and outside in a street involved/homeless agency environment
  • This position requires moderate amounts of physical effort, including long periods of standing; walking, climbing steps and ramps; bending, lifting donations, and pushing carts
  • This position requires mental effort, including computer, telephone, and two-way radio usage; frequently interacting with clients from a variety of socio-economic, cultural, and cognitive backgrounds, and behaviour levels
  • Note: vacation time during these 16 weeks is not permitted
  • Employment Security Check is required
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry, we require our employees to be in agreement and to sign our statement of faith
  • During programming weeks this position is high intensity requiring capacity to juggle program organization and facilitation (leading groups, delivering information sessions, adapting to program changes). Facilitators will interact with clients from a variety of socio-economic, cultural, and cognitive backgrounds, and behavior levels
  • The organizational & administrative component of program development & evaluation is office-based: requiring mental effort, including computer and telephone, as well as lifting for organizing program supplies
  • Work days and hours are to be determined with flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Rate of pay: $15.00 per hour; plus 4% vacation pay paid out at end of contract
