Position Description

Organizational Overview

Opportunity International was founded in 1971. We are in the business of creating opportunity both for people to work their way out of poverty and those who are passionate about making that happen. These opportunities unlock new possibilities for our clients that they could never before imagine. It is the chance to dream, to grow. It is the chance to provide for their families, send their children to school, create lasting change for themselves and their communities. With opportunities like these, the possibilities are endless. Our microfinance model revolves around the concept of loans repaid, not hand-outs, and is one of the few remedies for poverty that can be self-sustaining. Bono said it best —

"Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Give a woman microcredit, she, her husband, her children and her extended family will eat for a lifetime."— Bono

Some of our 2018 global impact highlights include:

  • 11 million current microentrepreneurs in 21 countries
  • $2.55 billion loaned
  • 97% loan repayment rate
  • $370 average first-time loan
  • 85% of clients are women
  • 2/3 of new clients live on less than $2.50 per day
  • 2.87 million children have been impacted by Education Finance since 2008
  • 1.8 million children are currently being served through Education Finance
  • 3.7 million clients registered for digital banking

Opportunity International Canada was founded in 1998, and is one of five Support Members including, Opportunity International Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, and the United States providing funding for global projects. Our revenue comes from Canadian individual and institutional donors, private foundations, charities and technical grants. Significantly increased capacity to serve more of the entrepreneurial poor has been realized by Opportunity Canada over the years.  Read about some encouraging statistics in our 2017 Annual Report.

At Opportunity International Canada, we believe that,

  • “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life." — Nelson Mandela
  • That right for those living in extreme chronic poverty continues to be at the forefront of everything Opportunity International is working toward. Between 1990 and 2015, the number of people living in extreme poverty was cut in half. Today, less than 10% of the global population lives in extreme poverty – down from 35% in 1990. Opportunity International is not slowing down – we are moving forward within the global community to help move the needle from 10% to zero. For the first time, we’re in shouting distance of ending extreme poverty in our lifetime. Will you consider joining the team at Opportunity International Canada to help make this a reality?
