Position Description

Why Not Youth Centre is a Christian not-for-profit in Brantford, Ontario specializing in working with homeless and at-risk youth ages 12-25. The program draws approximately 60 youth every program night, and nearly every young person engages in different aspects of programming. An on-site Youth Worker is a necessary employment role for responding to youth experiencing mental health crisis, but also for helping to build the positive environment that structurally reduces risk of escalation. The Youth Worker role will start with a nearly exclusive focus on crisis response, but will grow and evolve to include community development.

Job Details:

  • Permanent position pending a successful trial period
  • 15-25 hours/week
  • Schedule:
    • May-September: Monday - Thursday evenings;
    • September onward: Monday - Friday evenings

Ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience in frontline youth engagement
  • Be passionate about empowering high risk youth
  • Have training in crisis response, mental health, suicide prevention, and de-escalation
  • Have strong networking skills
  • Be passionate about building programs that change lives

  • Experience leading community programming

Necessary skills include:

  • Advanced communication skills
  • Ability to handle tough social situations
  • Ability to help youth to navigate mental health and/or situational crises

Responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging directly with youth, building rapports with all personalities, finding strategies to engage hard-to-reach youth, connecting youth to crisis support
  • Identifying crisis situations and responding to them, equipping volunteers to identify crisis, assisting youth directly with crisis response (housing, suicide interventions, mental health, referrals, job applications, school participation, etc.)
  • Helping youth to make phone calls to other agencies, helping them to appointments, moving, and advocating for them for things like ODSP and housing.
  • Engaging with other agencies for collaborative opportunities, youth advocacy, volunteer recruitment, and partnerships
  • Ensuring that all volunteers have received appropriate training, all paperwork and uploads are complete, and the schedule is filled in with the new volunteer’s information
  • Ensuring that fun things happen in the youth centre, overseeing volunteers who execute these activities, screening activities for resource-friendliness and capacity for impact
  • Ensuring safety in the youth centre
  • Optimizing programming to improve impact on youth
