Position Description

Yonge Street Mission (YSM) is the vibrant, local Christian development agency that is leading an infectious movement - going beyond meeting immediate needs by offering holistic programs and a pathway that can transform the lives of people living with poverty in Toronto from merely surviving to thriving. This is a full-time, 12 month contract position.

The Art Program Coordinator will work with street-involved youth in a dynamic drop-in setting (Evergreen Centre for Street Youth), small groups and one on one; supporting, pastoring, advocating for, and encouraging youth as they make choices to move to healthier lifestyles. They will oversee drop-in Art Space activities as well as the pre-skills arts-based program, Jubilee Designs (www.jubileedesigns.ca). The Art Program Coordinator will be responsible for supervising volunteers, student placements and one staff while also building relationships with youth and external organizational partners.

The Art Program Coordinator will report to the Director of Street-Involved Services.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Building meaningful relationships with street-involved/at-risk youth who access Evergreen
  • Spending one day a week in the Drop-In café, getting to know the youth and referring them to the appropriate services
  •  Setting programming schedules and leading arts workshops for Drop-In Art Space
  • Teaching arts and facilitation skills to small groups of youth in the Jubilee Designs program, training them to run screen printing workshops with corporate sponsors
  •  Recruiting and coordinating a team of volunteers to assist with art programs
  •  Maintaining a safe space for diverse participants, including the LGBTQ community, racialized participants, and people living with mental illness and varying abilities
  •  Providing effective intervention in crisis situations, tracking case notes and attendance
  •  Coordinating with suppliers, managing inventories of art materials and finished products
  •  Coordinating opportunities for the sale of Jubilee products (eg. Craft shows & online sales)
  •  Setting and adhering to program budgets, ongoing program development and evaluation

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have the following skills and training:

  •  A biblical understanding of the unique aspects of ministry among marginalized youth
  •  Demonstrated knowledge in working with street-involved/at-risk youth from culturally    diverse backgrounds
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to engage with a wide variety of personality types
  •  Teaching or program delivery experience with youth who are street-involved or socially    isolated
  •  Ability to manage crisis situations, strong conflict resolution skills
  •  Multicultural and multi-faith sensitivity
  •  Post-secondary education in the social service field (preferred)
  • A Police Check will be required/First Aid training is an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to YSM’s principles of faith, mission and values
