The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.


This summer intern position will support the new Volunteer Services Department in The Mustard Seed Kamloops office. Working closely with the local Volunteer Coordinator, the position will give the successful candidate a robust look into The Mustard Seed as a social agency, growth in various professional skills, and a strong reference for a transition internally or externally. Additionally, this position will support our Community Engagement efforts in the form of research, contact with the public and scheduling of meetings for our Engagement Specialist.


  • Assist the local Volunteer Coordinator and work closely with TMS Calgary Volunteer Services team to embed all aspects of scheduling, training and onboarding new volunteers
  • Work collaboratively with all TMS departments to ensure all volunteers are supported in their work with TMS
  • Coordinate and control the flow of volunteer inquiries
  • Assist our Community Engagement specialist on a specific project with research, public consultation and an awareness campaign


  • Completing education in ministry, social work, education, community development, youth and childcare studies, or a related program
  • Excellent administrative, time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Self-motivated and capacity to work independently
  • Experience working with marginalized population or in social work an asset
  • Competent with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, & PowerPoint)


  • This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week for 7 weeks
  • Note: vacation time during these 7 weeks is not permitted
  • Typical work day is 8:30-5:00, but flexibility for evenings and weekends required
  • Access to transportation for evenings and weekends may be required
  • Moderate mental effort: periods of high volume workload with significant people interaction (staff, guests, and volunteers)
  • Employment Security Check is required
