Position Purpose Summary: 

This Recreation Assistant position provides focused recreation therapies to residents living with advanced cognitive impairment according to their assessed needs.  The Recreation Assistant works in collaboration with all other clinical care providers to optimize the residents’ experience.

The Recreation Assistant is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre’s core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to the residents.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides focused recreation and leisure activities to residents living with advance cognitive impairment in accordance with established policy, physician’s orders, the resident plan of care and within the scope of practice
  • Assist in planning for assigned resident area activity calendars in accordance with the care plan goals and preferences of the residents on each home area
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of care delivered
  • Demonstrates a professional working knowledge of all equipment used in the delivery of care
  • Follows all policies and procedures; contributes to the development of site specific recreation therapy policies as indicated
  • Identifies appropriate therapeutic recreation goals and interventions on the care plans of identified residents
  • Follows established job routines on a daily basis
  • Effectively participates in conferences with the interdisciplinary team providing care to the residents
  • Seeks direction from the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator when resident need exceeds experience or scope of practice

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in recreation/leisure studies, therapeutic recreation from a recognized college or university
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a long term care setting providing therapeutic recreation programs focused on residents living with dementia
  • Training in Montessori, Eden Environment, Gentle Care and KIN philosophy based programming for dementia
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Proficiency with WORD, email, internet use and computerized documentation an asset

Competencies

  • Ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of current quality improvement,  risk management and best practices concepts in dementia care
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English
  • Creative and forward thinking

Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually

Hours: Evenings and weekends required

Salary: $19.27 per hour
