Position Description

The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Outreach Centre Head Cook, the Food Services Staff member is responsible, as part of a team, to assist with preparing meals for our guests and residential recovery residents. Food Services Staff will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received, sorted, and stored in the most efficient manner.  The Outreach Centre provides 50-70 meals on a monthly basis to guests serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives, verifies orders and stores all purchased food and kitchen items
  • Receives donated goods, sorts and moves to appropriate area
  • Places food on the giveaway carts during meal times
  • Oversees stored food rotation
  • Maintains Occupational Health & Safety Standards
  • Follows the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared, handled, and stored
  • Works alongside individual volunteers
  • Respect and follow necessary boundaries with coworkers, volunteers and guests
  • Keeps all food inventories up-to-date
  • Tracks statistics i.e. temperature audits, serving stats, meals served, etc.
  • Greets and welcomes all donors in a professional and respectful manner
  • Maintains cleanliness of kitchen; i.e. Floors, countertops, walls
  • Works in dish pit, cleaning cook ware and dishes
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Food pickups may be required
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • A preferred minimum of one (1) year experience working in the Food Service industry
  • Experience with menu planning, large quantity cooking, and working with donated goods an asset
  • Valid certificate from BC Food Safe course
  • Ability to lead a team consisting of paid staff, volunteers, and guests
  • Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise
  • A valid driver’s license is an asset and access to a reliable vehicle

Other Information

  • This is an on-call relief position for statutory days, vacation and illness coverage of our full-time cooks. There will be a minimum of two shifts per month but no guaranteed shifts or hours.
  • Shifts are 8 am – 4:30 pm Monday through Sunday. The on-call shifts could cover one or more shifts in-a-row depending on staffing requirements
  • This can be a high pressure environment where the ability to adapt to change and find creative solutions is essential
  • This position is often fast-paced, and requires substantial effort to analyze information and problem solve
  • This position requires varied mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and work directly with clients at risk
  • This is a “hands on” position and there will be lifting involved
  • Extensive periods of standing, walking, and reaching
  • Moderate physical effort and must be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Travel between Outreach Center and food pickups will be required
  • Employment Security Check is required
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
