The Mustard Seed is a Christian humanitarian organization whose vision is to build community, grow hope and support change. Intentionally following Jesus Christ and partnering with the community, The Mustard Seed combats the root causes of poverty in Alberta and British Columbia and works to create positive, lasting change in the lives of those we serve. The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Thrift Store Manager is responsible for the overall operations of the thrift store. The role will provide direction and leadership to staff and volunteers, manage the store finances, establish donor relationships, and provide front-line customer service. The Thrift Store Manager is accountable for developing new and creative methods to meet sales, donations, and volunteer goals.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Select, train, schedule, and coach thrift store staff
  • Engage volunteers to grow and develop the Thrift Store
  • Act as the primary liaison between the community and the Thrift Store
  • Make merchandising, pricing, and store design decisions
  • Establish new partnerships and promote The Mustard Seed as a top destination for donations
  • Coordinate events and marketing efforts to promote the Thrift Store to potential customers and   donors , including social media marketing 
  • Exemplify quality service to customers and donors
  • Process payment transactions and manage inventory
  • Supervise all cash audits, deposits, payables, financial reporting, and reconcile monthly with Central Services Finance Department
  • Provide monthly reports to the Managing Director

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a retail sales or customer service role is required
  • Supervisory experience is required and previous employment coaching experience is an asset
  • Sales and marketing experience, including cold calling is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and leadership skills
  • Skilled at conflict resolution and de-escalation
  • Empathetic towards, and ability to communicate and support individuals facing mental health,  addictions, chronic illness, homelessness, poverty and related challenges
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, access to a reliable vehicle, and clean Drivers Abstract is required

Other Information

  • This is a permanent full-time position working 40 hours per week, evenings and Saturdays will be required on occasion
  • Working in a store environment with administrative hours for scheduling
  • Travel between Mustard Seed locations is required as well as picking up donations
  • Physical effort is moderate and must be able to lift 50 lbs routinely to load and sort merchandise as required
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb, sit, and reach for extended periods of time
  • This position requires varied mental and emotional effort, must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations, provide conflict resolution and work directly with individuals with barriers
  • Personal vehicle, with $2 million liability insurance and a valid class 5 driver’s license are required
  • A clear Driver’s Abstract is required prior to offer of employment
  • Employment Security Check is required
