Certified Dental Assistant - Relief

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Managing Director - Kamloops, the Certified Dental Assistant will prepare dental room for patient and dentist. This includes sanitizing and preparing dental instruments or materials, performing procedures in compliance with the dental practice act, passing instruments to dentist, and supporting the overall mission of The Mustard Seed. The ideal candidate is a positive, friendly person with proven customer service and professional skills. Working with confidential information, the Certified Dental Assistant will take direction and work intuitively to support the completion of the dental office’s goals and objectives in a professional and clinically appropriate manner.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

CDA Administrative Support

  • Operate dental equipment such as pan machine, sterilizer, distiller, etc. to maintain hygiene and sterilization standards. Provide oversight and training of such equipment to all CDAs to maintain standards of hygiene and sterilization practices
  • Complete internal and external correspondence; maintain patient records and legal documents according to FOIP standards, form letters and other documents, distribute them as required
  • Review progress on standard department deliverables and take appropriate action to ensure timely completion of all department tasks
  • Assist in data collection and research; ensure compliance for legal requirements of dental record storage 
  • Prepare treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols
  • Prepare patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patient
  • Provide information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests
  • Provide instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to treatment area, positioning instruments for dentist's access, suctioning, and passing instruments
  • Take and develop X-rays
  • Provide materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments and in the patient's mouth
  • Make temporary crowns and restorations
  • Take preliminary impressions for diagnostic casts
  • Polish teeth and clinical crowns and apply fluoride and sealant
  • Helps dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drug and oxygen supply, and emergency telephone directory
  • Educate patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control, and postoperative instructions (when applicable)
  • Documents dental care services by charting in patient records–maintain confidentiality
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations as per British Columbia dental practices
  • Protect patients and colleagues by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols
  • Ensure operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, troubleshoot malfunctions, and call for repairs
  • Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level—anticipate needed supplies, order supplies, verify receipt of supplies, and record supplies obtained
  • Conserve dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results
  • Maintain professional knowledge and accreditation—complete continuing education credits, attend educational workshops, participate in professional associations
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Complete an approved Level II dental assisting program to become a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia or the equivalent in a different province
  • Minimum 1 year experience working in a dental clinic is mandatory
  • Valid Level C CPR certification
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience of proven administrative assistant experience
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and competency using data management systems or software programs
  • Able to work in a fast-paced role managing a diverse workload
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Passion to improve the health and wellness of and ending homelessness for British Columbia

OTHER INFORMATION

  • This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours or shifts. You will be notified at least 24 hours prior to shift being covered
  • Dental Clinic hours of operation: Tuesday –Thursday from 8:30-4:30. Hours of operation subject to change
  • Dental setting, extended sitting, reaching, standing, minimal lifting, and walking
  • Moderate mental effort: periods of high volume workload with significant people interaction (staff, guests, and volunteers)
  • Employment Security Check is required
