Camp Crossroads is a year-round camp which exists as a Christ centered ministry to support the local church in making disciples and developing leaders. Located in the town of Torrance on Black lake just outside of Gravenhurst, we have overnight camps in summer for children age 6 to 17, Family camps, Day camps, winter camps for youth, Leadership in Training Programs, Retreats as well as Christian school programs. It was established in 1980 and is affiliated with the Mennonite Brethren Conference of Ontario.

We are currently seeking a Maintenance Technician to join our team. You will assist the Property Manager to ensure the efficient and safe operations of Camp Crossroads. Work would include regular maintenance checks, repairing, building, running construction equipment and grounds keeping, while working closely with the Property Manager and all other members of our staff. The Maintenance Technician will commit to maintaining all facilities with the highest standards for safety while exhibiting strong interpersonal and time management skills. The Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting, logging and record keeping of all essential services (i.e. water treatment, sewage, fire safety, pest control, equipment and inventory inspections, furnace & filter checks, generators, fuel supply, etc.). The Maintenance Technician will need to work with a variety of volunteers and our seasonal staff while working outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. He or she must be available for an on-call rotation schedule to handle emergencies as they arise. The Maintenance Technician must hold him/herself with strong integrity, have good problem-solving skills and pay attention to detail.

Must be certified/licensed in the following:

  • G-class Driver’s license with an acceptable driver abstract
  • Small Drinking Water Systems Operator Course & Certification – or willing to acquire
  • Chainsaw Safety Operators Course – or willing to acquire
  • Working at heights training (Ministry of Labour) – or willing to acquire
  • Valid First Aid & CPR Certificates - or willing to acquire
  • Acceptable criminal background check

Special consideration given for those knowledgeable in the following areas:

  • Electrical
  • Plumbing – floats, pumps, water treatment, septic systems
  • General knowledge of construction and or trades - carpentry, drywall, painting, roofing, refrigeration systems, building care and maintenance, etc.
  • Snow plowing and sanding equipment
  • Chainsaw care, maintenance and safe operation
  • Landscaping – use of hand tools, lawn mower, weed whacker, and other landscaping equipment
  • Operation of small-heavy equipment – tractor, backhoe
  • General knowledge of mechanical; motors and small engines

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain grounds to reduce risk of danger or injury to persons using grounds and facilities
  • Prioritize tasks, perform maintenance, repairs and custodial activities for the ongoing health and operations of Camp Crossroads - (i.e. water issues in toilets/showers and sinks, windows, beds, locks, doors, elevators, flooring)
  • Maintain water and sewage systems to meet standards and fulfill all legal obligations including but not limited to record keeping and reporting
  • Conduct daily water sampling, testing and log for accurate record keeping
  • Conduct all required inspections at assigned intervals including but not limited to: water treatment, sewage, fire safety, pest control, equipment and inventory inspections, furnace & filter checks, generators, fuel supply, etc.
  • Ensure fire alarms and fire extinguishers are in working order and present in each cabin / building
  • Ensure grounds are clean and well maintained: grass cutting, garden care and landscaping
  • Snow removal- Plowing, blowing roads, and clearing snow from entrances and walkways
  • Proactively service equipment to ensure operation reliability during peak times
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance tools, supplies and equipment
  • Respond to staff and guest needs in a timely manner
  • Empty outdoor garbage and recycling 
  • Follow all applicable safety rules and procedures
  • Perform all work according to standard procedure and by building's operational schedule
  • Make minor repairs: dry wall, paint, carpentry, mechanical and plumbing as needed
  • Assist with major repairs or projects as needed
  • Winterizing of waterlines, buildings, equipment and vehicles
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing camp vehicles and equipment (includes farm and landscaping equipment, boats, trailers, small engines etc.)
  • Operation of various construction or farm equipment (i.e. Tractors, backhoe, snowplows, lawn mowers pulling trailers etc.)
  • Use of a variety of small hand tools (i.e. Trimers, chainsaw’s, blowers, generators etc.
  • Trouble shoot and report electrical needs to supervisor
  • Perform touch up and finish painting
  • Make proper use of all supplies, tools, equipment and time
  • Work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Continuously strive to finish each task to the utmost level of a job done well
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Maintain and update all applicable MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) forms for your area
  • Possess basic computer skills
  • If instructed, research and select vendors to identify and locate necessary parts and/or equipment
