Position Description

Working under the supervision of the After-School Program Supervisor, the Program support will instruct and participate in a variety of activities aimed at engaging students in fun, recreational and life-long learning objectives. The role of the Program Staff will be to facilitate various activities that promote physical movement, cognitive thinking, creativity and encourage positive personal development and wellness. The importance of establishing a positive and trusting relationship is essential to the better engagement and support of elementary and primary school aged children and their families in our community. The chosen individual will supervise children attending the program and promote safety and respect amongst all participants, while responding to the individual needs of children to establish a stable and consistent relationship with each child and their families/caregivers.  They will ensure a friendly and supportive atmosphere is maintained by developing appropriate strategies to support children in managing their behaviour.

Key Responsibilities

  • Programming:
  • Create weekly programming that:
    • Is open ended and inspired by children’s interests
    • Focuses on various developmental areas
    • Is adaptable and age appropriate (JK-Grade 5)
  • Has program elements/ centers seen in program on a daily basis and/ or throughout the week include: art, construction, literacy, gym, dramatic play, science/ technology, math, music etc.
  • The weekly program plan template will be posted each week for families. In addition to creating weekly program plans, staff is responsible for completing 3+ reflections that provide a full description of an activity that was completed in program with a follow-up reflection
  • Purchasing supplies for the program based on activities and supplies needed for the week, staff will be responsible for handling petty cash that can be used to purchase materials needed for program
  • Program Set-up
  • Staff will be required to set up program each day in the main dining hall area. This includes:
    • Setting up tables and chairs
    • Bring out program components and materials required under licensing standards
    • Set up of program space should be comfortable for easy flow of activities and interactions.
    • Programming must also be rich enough to engage children, to promote opportunity for creativity, while providing a comfortable, safe space daily
    • Program materials will be taken down and put away into the Children’s Room at the end of each day
  • Engagement with Children and Families
    • Staff members will pick up children from Oakwood Public School each day
    • Staff will engage with children throughout program, teaching, playing, and communicating
    • Staff is required to attending monthly “Family Dinners”- the first Friday of every month
    • Staff will encourage development and seek out teachable moments with the children
    • Staff will engage in conversations with families, relaying information about the day/ program, as well as be intentional to build trusting relationships with families


  • Qualified applicants will be graduates of the two-year community college Early Childhood Education diploma from a recognized educational institution
  • Must be registered ECE member in good standing with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in child development, planning, documenting and implementing age appropriate programs, with a focus on play based learning in early years of educational setting
  • Ability to communicate with children, parents, staff and community partners
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently
  • Excellent problem solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Be able to think outside of the box, gearing away from teacher led activities, and towards child led activities
  • Good Time Management
