Position Description

Halifax Chinese Alliance Church (HCAC) is an intergenerational community of followers of Jesus based in Halifax, Nova Scotia belonging to the Christian & Missionary Alliance (C&MA). With a growing congregation comprised of Cantonese, Mandarin and English speakers, HCAC is seeking a Pastor responsible for overseeing and developing the Church to achieve God’s vision.

About the Halifax Chinese Alliance Church:

The Halifax Chinese Alliance Church was established in 1984 to meet the needs of students in the city of Halifax. As the largest city in Atlantic Canada and with four universities, Halifax has a large student population coming from the Atlantic Provinces, other regions of Canada and other countries, including many students from Hong Kong and China. During this time, HCAC’s ministry was focused on “planting seeds of faith”, reaching out to students before they transition to other parts of the country or return to their country of origin. [West End, Halifax - Wikipedia]

In recent years, the demographics of HCAC have shifted to focus on immigrant families, with an influx of many Cantonese and Mandarin speaking families with young children. These recent changes have steadily increased the size of the congregation, including participation in various ministries. To meet the language needs of these families and the students, HCAC operates two Sunday services which includes a Chinese service (with translation for both Cantonese and Mandarin) and an English service. Moving forward, HCAC is interested in operating separate services for all three languages. In seeking a Pastor, HCAC is looking for a servant leader who can guide and oversee the Church in meeting the shifting and growing needs of its congregation.

Some other quick facts about HCAC:

  • The English service was initiated in 2019
  • As of 2020, there are roughly 45-50 people in Chinese worship and 15-20 in English worship
  • The services are combined on Communion Sundays
  • As of 2020, the HCAC congregation includes approximately 25% seniors, 25% families, 25% single working adults, 15% children and teens, and 10% university students
  • HCAC operates numerous ministries including a Mandarin fellowship (~20 members), Cantonese fellowship (~15 members), student and young adult fellowship (~20 members), teens’ fellowship (~10 members) and various other bible study groups.
  • HCAC operates a children Sunday school each week
  • HCAC is a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) in Canada
  • HCAC is expected to complete church organization within C&MA by 2020
  • HCAC is mission-minded for missions in Atlantic Canada and across the world
