About the role:

Reporting to the Design Lead and Studio Manager, the Associate Copywriter has the essential responsibility of understanding the unique voice of our non-profit clients and ensuring that voice is reflected in an authentic and meaningful way. In this role, you will develop a broad range of communications, from inspiring high-level concepts to compelling direct mail letters and emails.

This role is equal parts storyteller and technician where the successful incumbent understands the science of direct marketing but can adapt their style to meet different content needs. You are passionate about your craft and can inspire others. Collaborating with a diverse range of experts who are motivated to get the best results for clients, you will help lead the creative process in partnership with a designer to create great donor experiences and help position Blue North as the agency of choice for potential clients.

What you’ll do in the role:

  • Considering the creative brief requirements, develop creative concepts in collaboration with key project team members while ensuring the final product meets a high standard of quality
  • Write direct mail and other compelling marketing copy that delivers on our clients’ business goals and strategies across all platforms and channels including direct mail, email, website copy, social media and other donor-facing communications including newsletters, reports and cases for support
  • Apply best writing practices for direct mail and donor-centered fundraising, ensuring a consistent and well-developed client voice across all materials
  • Edit and review content pieces from other writers and provide assistance as needed to writers and freelancers
  • Manage and prioritize copywriting assignments and discuss workload with team members to determine priorities
  • Work closely with Consultants and Account Managers to ensure client expectations are met
  • Write Blue North marketing material including blog posts, emails, social media posts and press releases
  • Support the development of Blue North proposals and reports including copywriting, review, editing and proofing as required
  • Commit to professional development and improvement – always conducting research and looking for ideas to improve your skills and increase value for clients

You bring to the role:

  • 2 to 3 years of writing experience and adept at writing direct responses
  • Technical writing experience would be considered an asset
  • Multi-channel, platform writing experience (direct mail, digital communication, brochures, newsletters) with an understanding of writing for variable communication pieces
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Public Relations, Journalism or Communications; education and/or relative experience will be considered
  • Organizational skills with a proven track record of meeting deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of people, including writers, designers, account managers, project managers and programmers
  • Strong computer skills with experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro and MS Office Suite programs
