Leaside Presbyterian Church

Leaside Presbyterian Church is looking for a Director of Christian Education for our church school and youth group. This person will have a deep spirituality and a growing faith that values openness and wonder. A passion for helping children and youth experience the mystery of God and encounter Christ by engaging the stories of the Bible is essential for this position.

Position Description

The Director of Christian Education is responsible for working with the Christian Education Chair and minister to organize and resource Leaside Presbyterian Church’s Christian Education program for children and youth, as well as to organize and help train church members for the task of teaching and leading Christian Education in a shared capacity.

Outreach and Growth of the Christian Education Program for Children and Youth:

In partnership with the minister,

  • Engage the community to connect with families and outreach through new programs
  • Conduct outreach to institutions (local schools, non-profits, community centres) and organizations in the neighbourhood
  • Research Children and Youth ministry opportunities in Leaside
  • Plan regular outreach activities (mid-week, Saturdays, Sundays)
  • Contact parents of children and youth regarding any upcoming activities or notices
  • Organize and train volunteers to help with outreach
  • Ensure compliance with the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s “Leading with Care” policy

Other tasks to be included as the ministry grows:

  • Choosing and coordinating curriculum for the church school and the youth group.
  • Leading church school every Sunday for a group of children and youth. Includes storytelling, leading discussions, and some singing.
  • Scheduling and training volunteers to help teach or assist in the church school and nursery
  • Leading an activity or lunch and learn with the youth 2-3 times per year.
  • Preparing lesson plans and materials weekly
  • Collaborating in the production of the annual Christmas Pageant.

Requirements:

  • A mature faith, a calming non-anxious presence, and an ability to connect with children
  • A love and knowledge of the stories in the Bible and the ability to help children and youth connect with them
  • Good planning and organizational skills and open to receiving feedback
  • A team leader who demonstrates a spirit of cooperation and works to empower others
  • An awareness of the traditions of the Presbyterian Church in Canada
  • Formal theological training is an asset
  • A recent Vulnerable Sector Police Check and First Aid Training

Other Details:

  • Accountable to the Christian Education Chair and the Minister
  • This is a contract position up to 1 year with the potential for renewal.
  • 10 hours / week (includes being present every Sunday and a mid-week activity and preparation time)
  • $20 / hour or $200 / week
  • Start date: September 1, 2022
