Position Description

HOUSING WORKER (20 hours per week, 12-month contract position)

Adam House is a refugee home that provides shelter and support for newly arrived refugee claimants in Toronto. We serve refugee claimants by providing a welcoming short-term home; advocating for access to social, medical, and legal services; assisting with the refugee claimant process; facilitating integration; educating churches and the community about the refugee landscape; and responding to opportunities for growth. 

We have 4 sites—our main site located near Dufferin & Bloor, and three transitional housing units located in North York and East York. We are adding a 5th location in January 2024, which will be located near Yonge & St. Clair. Altogether, Adam House provides housing and support for up to 52 persons at a time. Additionally, we support former residents and drop-in clients. 

This position requires the Housing Worker to work from all 5 sites on a rotating basis and may involve some evening hours.

Job Description:

  • Create and update database of landlords amenable to renting to newcomers and establish rapport)
  • Network with housing workers from other organizations
  • Work closely with the Frontline team to identify in advance clients who are due to transition into the wider community and prepare a move out plan
  • Assist clients in all the AH homes with searching for housing using a variety of tools
  • Empower clients to continue the search on their own
  • Ensure that clients have the required documentation when viewing apartments, rooms
  • Accompany clients who require additional support with negotiation
  • Work closely with clients to prevent them from falling prey to housing scams
  • Advocate for clients when they are facing discrimination from landlords
  • Educate clients to understand their rights, responsibilities and legal tools available to support them in times of landlord-tenant conflicts
  • Follow up with clients after they have moved out to monitor how they are settling in
  • Collaborate with the Settlement Worker to assist with clients’ transfer process to the Transition Homes
  • Any other tasks assigned to you by your supervisor
