Position Description

JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the MCC BC Advancement team, the Communications Assistant plays a key role in increasing digital media presence, addressing communication needs, and promoting MCC BC’s local programs through engagement. This position reports to the Director of Development & Advancement, with daily guidance from the Communications Lead.  The Communications Assistant is responsible for updating, creating, and distributing content for MCC BC programs, assisting in social media content creation, website management, and maintaining the MCC BC photo database. They will also provide administrative support to the Communications department, including maintaining records, donor communications, and managing inventory for printed materials and displays.

Additionally, the Communications Assistant actively contributes to team meetings, ensuring alignment with MCC BC’s Christian values, and occasionally supports volunteers, staff, and departmental tasks.

This role participates in devotional and prayer times at MCC BC and/or at local church and faith gatherings, being prepared to answer inquiries about MCC BC’s mission and values. This role contributes to a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values, while modelling nonviolent peacemaking in the workplace, in the community and the church through respectful interactions with others. This role requires adherence to MCC BC’s Code of Conduct, policies, practices, and procedures, including Workplace Health and Safety.
  • When you work: this position blends a regular office hours schedule (between 8:30 – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday) with occasional evening or weekend work to facilitate operational needs, as necessary.
  • Where you work: this position is located at MCC BC’s Abbotsford office. There is flexibility for a hybrid home/office schedule, with the expectation that this role would be available to work from the Abbotsford office as required.
  • How much you work: this is a full-time salaried position working a minimum of 37.5 hours per week. Supporting special organizational initiatives may require working extended, after or holiday hours, as necessary.
  • Physical conditions & requirements: this position may require significant computer time and will require an office setting for creative and design time.
  • Pace of work: this position works independently with high day-to-day variation, including working on various communication projects and design needs.
  • Interactions with vulnerable populations: this position may have interactions with vulnerable populations when capturing stories of impact surrounding local programs.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent Communication: Strong abilities in writing, editing, and proofreading with the ability to convey information in a clear, engaging tone. Strong verbal communication skills with a pleasant and professional phone demeanor.
  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized with proven abilities in time management, inventory management, maintaining records, and general administrative support.
  • Creative Skills: Able to create engaging content. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign), or other design tools.
  • Digital media: Familiarity with website management (CMS systems like WordPress), social media platforms, and photo databases is preferred.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, & ACCREDITATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in communications or related fields, particularly in content creation, social media management, or marketing is preferred.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & LICENSING

  • Legally able to work in Canada.
  • Satisfactory criminal record clearance (required upon hire).
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence along with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract.
