Position Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Athletic Director (AD) at Briercrest College is responsible for leading and developing an Athletics program that is mission-centered, committed to excellence, and integrates faith with sport and academics. This role plays a vital part in fostering a vibrant, Christ-centered athletic culture that prioritizes the spiritual, academic, and athletic development of student-athletes. The AD is expected to drive community engagement, support student recruitment, and serve as a relational leader within the campus community.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Faith Commitment and Servant Leadership: A devoted follower of Jesus Christ who models faith in action and leads by example, fostering spiritual and character development in the Athletics community.
  • Education and Ministry Alignment: Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred. Background in athletics, education, or ministry leadership is strongly valued.
  • Relational and Mentorship-Focused: An approachable leader with strong interpersonal skills who is committed to mentorship, relationship-building, and creating a positive, team-oriented environment.
  • Professional Integrity and Responsibility: Maintains high standards of personal and professional conduct, with a focus on collaborative leadership and community engagement.

ACTIVITIES AND DESIRED OUTCOMES

  • Vision and Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a strategic plan to advance the vision of Briercrest Athletics, promoting a best-in-class approach to student-athlete success and community engagement.
  • Community and Alumni Engagement: Build and sustain relationships with alumni, parents, local churches, and community organizations to strengthen support for the Athletics program.
  • Fundraising and Donor Relations: Collaborate with the Development Department to cultivate donor relationships and secure funding that supports program growth, scholarships, and facility needs.
  • Competitive Excellence and Student Success: Foster an environment that encourages excellence in competition, spiritual growth, and academic achievement. Support coaches and staff in developing teams that excel in character, leadership, and skill.
  • Staff Development and Policies: Recruit, develop, and mentor Athletics staff, establishing policies that support the health, safety, and operational success of the department.
  • Facilities and Compliance Oversight: Coordinate with the Operations department to oversee the management and maintenance of athletic facilities, ensuring compliance with league and association standards and fostering safe, functional environments for all users.
  • Chaplaincy Support and Faith Integration: Integrate spiritual support within the department, promoting faith-based growth and mentorship for student-athletes and staff.
  • BCA Athletics and Prairie Hockey Academy: Work closely with BCA Athletics and the Prairie Hockey Academy to ensure cooperation and complementary programming and ethos. Relationship nature and reporting structure between these key stakeholders to be determined. 
  • Student Body Intramurals: Though not responsible for organizing and coordinating, the AD has authority over matters related to student body intramurals. 
  • Day-to-Day Operations and Flexibility: Take a hands-on approach in the daily operations of the Athletics Department, including game day management, scheduling, and budgeting.
  • A well-managed department contributing significantly to Briercrest’s institutional success.
  • A network of engaged alumni and community members who actively support Briercrest Athletics.
  • Athletic teams that achieve excellence in both competition and academics, reflecting Briercrest’s mission and values.
  • A culture of wellness and holistic development that prioritizes spiritual growth, academic achievement, and athletic performance.
  • Strong partnerships with Briercrest Christian Academy and external organizations, creating a cohesive, mission-aligned athletic experience.

TEAM RELATIONSHIPS 

  • Direct Reports: Oversees all Athletics staff directly or through delegation.
  • Executive Membership: Serves as a member of the President’s council, actively participating in cross-departmental initiatives and campus planning.
  • Reports To: President or designated representative.

WORK SCHEDULE 

  • Regular Hours: Monday to Friday, with availability for game days, evenings, and events as needed to support the Athletics program.

MEETINGS AND COLLABRATIONS 

  • Conducts regular one-on-one meetings with all direct reports to ensure alignment, support, and clear communication within the department.
  • Holds regular department meetings, including all Athletics staff and coaches, to foster collaboration, share updates, and address departmental goals and initiatives.
  • Regular check-ins with the President or designated representative.
  • Collaborates with departments across campus, including Student Life, Academic Affairs, and Ministry Programs, to support student recruitment, retention, and community-building.

COMPENSATION AND EXPENSES 

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience.
  • Expenses: Includes approved travel and other necessary expenditures related to job duties.

EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK 

  • Success is evaluated based on established KPIs, with a structured feedback process to support ongoing development and alignment with institutional goals.
