Position Description

KILLAM PENTECOSTAL TABERNACLE (KPT) is a rural church that's located in a lovely prairie town about 90 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, in Alberta.

I've had the privilege of being the Transition Pastor since August of 2024, and I'd like to share some thoughts of my impressions of the community, the church, the position and the area. I've had ample time to examine these things "up close", and as I share them I'm trusting that God will put a call on one or more of the readers of this advertisement to consider applying for considering to become the next Pastor.

THE COMMUNITY

Killam has about 1,000 people living in its town boundaries. There are some real pluses: There's a hospital that serves a fairly broad area. The CO-OP grocery store seems to always be a busy place. The Guardian Drug Store is available for many medical and other shopping needs. A detachment of the RCMP ensures law and order in the community, and a public school tends to the education needs of children. There's a fairly large recreation centre in town, the Agriplex, and it houses an arena, a swimming pool, and a fitness centre, among other things. Of course, there's a good selection of restaurants, and even two motels operate in the town. There is a town council that plans community events and oversees all the day-to-day business of Killam. Besides the Pentecostal church, a Baptist Church, a United Church and a Roman Catholic Church all have congregations here.

THE CHURCH

KPT is the oldest Pentecostal church in the Province of Alberta! It has had a rich history of serving God for over a century! There are some impressive qualities to this congregation: Though it's a small church in a small community, the congregation has a great mix of ages within it, including young families, lots of children, and a blend of middle-aged and seniors. I've loved the unity I've sensed here! Musically, there are at least four qualified pianists, and other musical instruments that are played in services. Several people give good leadership in the worship of the church. The church has a Pastor's Council to assist the Pastor in the decision-making and vision departments.

The church is not carrying debt, and it owns both a church building as well as the former theatre in town, now called "The Living Room". The larger facility has been used for outreach events, gospel concerts, prayer gatherings, and also children's programs. There's a feeling that with the right leader in place "The Living Room" might become a centre for additional community events and programs, and ministries.

The church enjoys fellowship, and hosts a "pot-blessing" lunch once per month following a morning service. There are programs for children both on Sunday and during the week.

THE POSITION

I believe that this church needs one who has a genuine call on their life to serve as a Pastor, and will be an individual who will serve with strong Pastoral gifts. Of greatest importance will be a heart to reach people for Christ. A good prayer life and an ability to impart Biblical truth in a practical, relevant way will help those who attend to grow in their spiritual gifts and minister to the needs of the community and area. The new leader can be like others before him (or her) who look to break barriers between churches, and bridge the gaps that exist to help churches to serve God together.

Whether the Pastor who applies has a proven track record in serving other congregations, or they're just beginning the journey, having had a strong leadership background in a church context will be helpful. This individual should be an equipper, a visionary, a teacher, a servant-leader, and be creative to guide the church forward in these challenging times. There's little doubt in my mind that KPT wants to grow God's Kingdom, and will follow a Spirit-filled leader to ensure that that task is accomplished.

Personally, I believe that a younger Pastor is what this congregation is looking for and needs, and hopes that when a Pastor comes they’ll stay for a longer period and see the church grow steadily.

THE AREA

Some things can be highlighted about the area PHYSICALLY. First, Killam is about a 45 minute drive to Camrose, a city of close to 20,000 with many shopping and entertainment conveniences. It's also near a dozen smaller towns, all with their own unique pluses in dining and sights to see. The nearest airport is south of Edmonton, about 90 minutes drive away.

SPIRITUALLY, there's been a fall Prayer Tour that's happened in recent years in the area, with good participation from many area churches. Some of the churches have Pastors who enjoy Ministerial Meetings and coffee times, so it's not a place where a Pastor needs to be lonely, but the fellowship is genuinely good if you choose to participate in it.

Education and Qualifications

The one we seek should have at least an undergraduate theological degree, be a credential holder or be eligible to receive credentials with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, and be a resident of Canada. If the degree is not from a Pentecostal institution, it’s possible that 2-3 additional courses may be required before full credentials can be given by the PAOC.

Application

Please send a cover letter and a resume to: board@killampentecostal.ca. October 31/25 is the deadline to forward applications. Those selected for an interview will be contacted. A job description will be available to interested applicants. Of note, this is a full-time position.
