Position Description

The Mustard Seed provides basic services— food, clothing and housing, and support services—education and employment, to those living in poverty within Alberta and British Columbia.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Men’s Recovery Program Supervisor, the On-call Support Worker is responsible for providing relief and vacation coverage for regular overnight support staff.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the clients with their physical, social, emotional & spiritual needs in a manner that promotes the client’s right to dignity, independence and choice. See to it that the immediate basic and legitimate needs of residential clients are met
  • To ensure that tenants in the Men’s Recovery maintain a good standard of cleanliness  and complete assigned cleaning chores
  • Maintain a daily activity journal to report any key incidences, issues or concerns and read information entered by staff from previous shift. This also includes creating a report at the end of the shift; briefly detailing any relevant information encountered
  • Conduct security and safety measures  at start, mid and end of shift
  • Monitor and provide assistance to community groups, volunteers and organizations that participate in the daytime and evening outreach workshops, activities or programs by helping  with setup and take down
  • Medication distribution (if any) and providing support to clients’ commitment to appropriate and consistent taking of prescription medication
  • Perform cleaning duties
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, SafeTALK or ASSIST, Nonviolence Crisis Intervention, etc.) and attend meetings as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Diploma/certificate in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling and related fields
  • 1-year experience in social work or counseling preferred
  • Ministry background considered a strong asset
  • Must have good communication & interpersonal skills—develop good rapport with sensitivity to clients and their needs
  • Experience with working in a drug and alcohol recovery environment is an asset
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Ability to deal with crisis effectively and in a proactive manner
  • First Aid Certificate is an asset
  • A valid driver’s license would be an asset

Other Information

  • This is a relief/casual position with no guaranteed hours or shifts
  • On occasion will be required to complete on-call shifts for the Outreach Day Room when needed
  • Employment Security Check is required
