Position Description

Situated at 105 Gibson Drive in Markham, 105 Gibson Centre is a 47,000-square-feet Christian centre. Our mission is to serve the locals and those in need, and to share with them the compassion and hope of Jesus. We provide diversified social services, such as youth programs, older adults wellness community education, career counseling, food bank, cultural and recreational activities. 105 Gibson Centre also partners with various local organizations to provide comprehensive tailor-made services to the residents in the community and surrounding neighbourhoods. 105 Gibson Centre opened in Oct 2013 is now seven years old. Running for around 80 hours a week, we have captured 50,000 visits through rental and programs and some 7,000 individuals have registered to our programs or services. We believe that we have delivered relevant services to the ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in the catchment area. 105 Gibson Youth Services is a platform for vocation exploration for youth and youth workers. We are to develop youth and young workers to desire living life to the full and nurture them to have an openness towards transformation in Jesus Christ, through loving involvement and contribution in the local community.

We are looking for candidates to fill following volunteer positions:

High School Tutors

Build relationships with high school students through tutoring in math, science or ESL. Tutoring happens both virtually and in-person based on the tutor's preference. Our online platform is Discord so that students and tutors can connect throughout the week. Connect with students at in-person events hosted by the Centre.

  • Knowledge in high school curriculum in Math, Science, and/or ESL
  • Must be available Saturday Mornings (In-Person: 9:30-10:45/11:00-12:15 or Online: 10:00-11:30)

Mentors for Youth

We have two volunteer focused programs for high school students: 40 Hours & Beyond and the Influencers Program. In both programs, students are connected with mentors who journey with them and help them in personal development. One program focuses on personal development through hands-on volunteer experiences while the other is a leadership development program where students work together on a Student Council. Most mentoring happens online through Discord and can be scheduled at times that work for you and your students.

  • Relational
  • Flexible Schedule
  • Comfortable meeting online with students in small groups and one-on-one

Community Night Leaders

Community Nights run year-round with the exception of the summer and holidays when program shifts. We are looking for people to help run the different aspects of the program: afterschool, dinner, and community groups. Afterschool is a drop-in with open-gym, homework room, hangout space, and pop-up workshops. Then we host a free dinner for students and volunteers. The evening finishes with Community Groups which consist of a large group teaching and games followed by small groups where leaders choose activities to foster community among their group. The first Thursdays of the month program shifts to an event geared to invite students. All Community Group Leaders will be trained on using the Discord Server, our online platform, to connect with students outside of Thursday night programs.

  • Available Thursdays 3:15-8:15 pm (times flexible depending on where you want to serve)
