Position Description

Located on a beautiful 86-acre campus in Hamilton, Ontario, Redeemer operates under a charter from the Government of Ontario and is a member of Universities Canada (UC), the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), and the Canadian Council of Christian Charities (CCCC).

Reporting to the Vice President, Administration and Finance, the Director of Information Technology has the accountability and responsibility for planning, administering, and assessing the university’s IT staff, systems, and applications, including: oversight of other IT staff; implementation and maintenance of IT hardware and network systems and environment; effectively identifying, implementing, and training for educational, web, database, and business solutions; developing, implementing, and maintaining outstanding help-desk and customer service procedures using industry standard processes.

In order to achieve these accountabilities and responsibilities, the focus of the Director of Information and Technology role is to ensure the proper provisioning of educational and academic support, the provisioning of an IT environment that will support an academic environment, and the provisioning of a service oriented IT department that will provide academic programming support and services within a University learning environment.


  • The Director supervises the Network Manager, Desktop Manager, Support Manager, Database Analyst, AV Manager, Computer Technician, and student workers, and ensures that they provide prompt, efficient and courteous service to the Redeemer community.
  • The Director ensures development of an IT Strategic Plan, and carries out the IT strategic plan based on direct alignment with organizational strategic objectives and works with organizational stakeholders to define project scope and plan to achieve data and information management objectives within the strategic plan.
  • The Director works directly with various vendor partners leveraging external expertise and solutions while maintaining a focus on organizational data strategy goals and objectives.
  • The Director works directly with stakeholders to identify and analyze potential new technologies and their usefulness to faculty, staff and students, and communicates results to the Vice-President, Administration and Finance.
  • The Director provides recommendations to the Vice-President, Administration and Finance as to the optimum direction for Redeemer in terms of the continued growth and development of the IT technical architecture, AV architecture, computer labs, the communication system, and the acquisition of software. The Director also provides advice on software enhancements and developments to other directors, senior administrators or faculty.
  • The Director ensures the security of the Redeemer network. This includes maintaining vigilance against attacks from within the campus network and from the Internet. It involves developing strategies, with input from the Network Manager and the Desktop Manager, to combat spyware and virus infiltration.
  • The Director ensures the availability and performance of the enterprise applications such as email, LMS, ERP, and SIS.
  • The Director is responsible for the continued operation of the telephone system, maintaining phone extensions, and voicemail. This includes upgrades to the system, phone replacement as necessary, regular maintenance including moving extensions and exploring alternative telephone technologies to ensure our system is appropriate to the needs of the university.
  • The Director prepares and manages an IT budget.
  • Using industry standard processes, the Director works to ensure optimal IT architecture performance, reliability, capacity, and availability.
  • The Director ensures the use of industry standard project management methodologies to properly execute projects that utilize IT technology within the solution.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • The Director ensures the use of industry standard project management methodologies to properly execute projects that utilize IT technology within the solution.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience including at least 2-3 years supervisory experience, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Some experience with multiple programming languages, including PHP, HTML, SQL, JavaScript, etc. Experience in IT systems, administration, and ITIL.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and be proactive with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities. Must be comfortable working in a growing environment and committed to meeting deadlines and improving processes.
  • Must be able to function as an effective team leader, with experience managing developing team members.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with senior leadership, technologists and business partners to define business processes, analyze operational efficiencies, implement creative solutions and measure delivering results.
  • Proven success in developing business and educational solutions.
  • Must possess the ability to perform strategic planning, including the development of strategic plans and the adherence to them.
  • Proven success in project and service management and proactive IT risk management.

Other Requirements

  • Understanding of, and commitment to Redeemer University (mission, values, and Reformed Christian identity) and ability to articulate its mission effectively and persuasively.


  • A B.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or Information Systems is required.
  • Supervisory training, such as time management, workload management, conflict management, etc would be an asset.
