Position Description

The Missions Pastor works closely with the Pastoral Executive Team (PET) to oversee and implement a Bible- based ministry for missions. He provides teaching, training, pastoral care and counselling related to the missions portfolio.

At The Met we recognize that there’s tremendous strength in a flexible pastoral team. The duties set out below may be adapted as ministry needs change. We seek pastors who are adaptable and flexible. The core responsibilities of pastoral ministry at The Met include: teaching the Bible in a variety of contexts; providing timely pastoral care and counselling to those in need; officiating at weddings and funerals; and, supporting the Lead Pastor in other pastoral needs as required.

Role and Responsibilities

The Missions Pastor works with the PET to foster a missions culture at The Met through these 3 key principles:

  • Raising up a new generation of missionaries
  • Investing in partnerships with local churches on the field
  • Considering activities to support gospel proclamation

Planning:

The Missions Pastor oversees missions at The Met in collaboration with the Pastoral Executive Team. He strategizes and plans to determine the priority needs in alignment with The Met mission and the 3 key principles:
(10% of time)

  • Prepares to plan through a devotion to prayer and reading of the Word
  • Regularly consults ministry leaders to implement, evaluate and execute strategies for effective missions ministry across all ages and stages
  • Communicates plans to Met ministry staff and encourages participation
  • Consults academic and ministry resources to integrate demonstrated strategies aligned with the 3 key principles

Teaching and Training:

The Missions Pastor oversees the teaching and training component of this ministry:
(50% of time)

  • Applies God’s Word to teach missionaries biblical truths including evangelism and discipleship principles
  • Develops curriculum and delivers vibrant and compelling teaching that lead Met missionaries in a biblical study to help them understand their roles and responsibilities
  • Oversees The Met’s Missionary in Training (MIT) program and supervises the MITs through:
    • Providing teaching in growth in maturity (spiritually, emotionally and relationally)
    • Encouraging the MITs as they serve in various ministries; developing a focused reading program aligned with God's Word and God’s Mission; assessing and determining practical application of God's Word through Ministry (MITs will complete the Timothy course during their time at The Met)
    • Facilitating relationships with senders (MITs will engage with partners and develop a support team throughout their experience on our team at The Met)
    • Providing a framework for opportunities for the MITs to be mentored by our MET missionary family
    • Preparing a program for the MITs to visit Met missionaries on the field; and provide an introduction to church planting to prepare them for the issues related to church planting as our missionaries are expected

Cultivation of the Body of Christ:

Models the cultivation of the global capacity of the body of Christ through partnerships and engagement with individuals, families, and organizations engaged in a variety of kingdom work around the world. This requires leadership, oversight, people, and effective processes:
(30% of time)

  • Provides leadership and oversight of all aspects of the missionary life-cycle through the onboarding, annual assessments, levels of support, and off-boarding processes with godly, robust, yet sensitive, criteria
  • Enhances the awareness and communication of missions initiatives with the Met community and beyond
  • Provides foundational principles for the missions policy and budget
  • Encourages and disciples candidates, as they seek the Lord's will for their lives
  • Encourages, leads and trains Met missions teams to be involved in missions service and to visit missions sites
  • Revitalizes the annual Met missions conference
  • Plans special events (seminars, forums) to raise missions awareness
  • With the help of the Missions Member Care Coordinator uses social media to prepare and deliver impactful missions-centric podcasts for the broader church

Missionary Care:

Establishes the standard of exemplary missionary care building on the baseline of The Met’s history in missions, enabling the Coordinator of Member Care:
(10% of time)

  • Above all, provides leadership in determining, then applying the benchmark for exemplary missionary care to our missionary family
  • As pastor, models engaging and intentional discipleship with our missionaries
  • Encourages missionaries where they need to be encouraged, helping them identify areas of need then develops a bible-based plan to address those needs
  • Provides regular practical assistance, resources and encouragement to our missions family on the field or on furlough

Other Expected Duties:

  • Participates in various pastoral duties including care, counselling, baptisms, weddings, and funerals;
  • Participates in ministry staff and all-staff meetings, and prayer meetings
  • Regularly fulfills the training and requirements
  • Participates in the performance review process, including developing (and reporting on) personal goals with the Lead Pastor to enhance ministry performance
  • In due course, and depending on gifting and experience, there may be opportunities to participate in preaching and Sunday service leading
