Position Description

BFM Foundation (Canada) and related entities is a national Christian charitable organization with 50+ Mission Thrift Stores across Canada, which are staffed primarily by volunteers. The net revenue proceeds from all Mission Thrift Stores is devoted to the Joint Ministry of BFM Foundation (Canada) with Bible League Canada. These funds are used to establish adult literacy programs, provide church planter training, children’s ministry programs, in over 40 countries around the world.

BFM Foundation Thrift Store Development Ltd. is currently seeking a full-time Chief Operating Officer (“COO”).  As a member of the Executive, the COO will operationalize the vision, mission and strategies of BFM Foundation through the work of the COO and the team that report to same.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the overall goal is to support Mission Thrift Stores to maximize store contributions to the joint ministry of BFM Foundation with Bible League Canada by sustainably optimizing the Mission Thrift Stores’ operating capabilities and new/satellite store development.

The COO shall supervise and be responsible for the Operations Support Staff and Contractors including all Regional Directors and Support Staff.


Minimum requirement of a bachelor degree.
Studies that include one or more of business, retail management, not-for-profit management preferred.


  • Experience working with not for profits and/or charities.
  • Experience working with policy governance boards.
  • Experience in project management, Commercial real estate acquisitions (Leases) and retail operations.
  • 10+ years’ experience working in an operational capacity.
  • 5+ years’ experience managing complex organizational human resources, finances, operations and strategies.
  • Proven track record of outstanding performance in a previous complex enterprise.
  • Proven track record of managing complex budgets successfully.
  • Ability to make business projections three years into the future.

Technical Skills

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Intermediate/Advanced organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, while maintaining the “big picture” perspective.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of an audience, designing and making formal presentations.

Interpersonal Skills and Personal Attributes

  • Knowledge and passion for BFM Foundation (Canada) and its work.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines and budgets in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Excellent relationship-building and networking skills and proven conflict resolution abilities.
  • Experience interacting with people from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and work styles.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing conditions with an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Reliable and proactive, with the ability to take the initiative, problem-solve & implement solutions.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently as needed.
  • A dedicated team player, who enjoys working collaboratively with others (management, staff, board members and volunteers) in team settings to solve problems in a fun-loving manner and with a servant’s heart.

  • In fulfilling your responsibilities, you will be required to pray with people who work or volunteer for Mission Thrift Stores.  This may include, but is not limited to opening in prayer at Mission Thrift Store Board and/or Staff Meetings, Mission Thrift Store events, BFM Foundation (Canada) Annual Conference.

Working Conditions:  

26 out of 50 Mission Thrift Stores are in Ontario.  Preference will be given to the person that can work partly from the Newmarket office and partly from home. Travel will be required throughout Canada.

Salary Expectations:  Remuneration will be commensurate with experience.  You may include your salary expectations.
