Position Description

Adam House is a faith based Christian ministry that provides shelter and support for newly arrived refugee claimants in Toronto. Motivated by God’s love we serve refugee claimants by providing a welcoming short-term home; encouraging them to make a personal connection with Christ, and His church in our community; advocating for access to social, medical, and legal services; assisting with the refugee claimant process; facilitating integration; educating churches and the community about the refugee landscape; and responding to opportunities for growth.

We have 3 sites—our main site located near Dufferin & Bloor, and two transitional housing units located in North York and East York. Altogether, Adam House provides housing and support for up to 43 persons at a time. Additionally, we support former residents and drop-in clients.

Adam House is looking for a full-time Settlement Manager who will lead the settlement team, a team dedicated to serving and supporting our clients with compassion and excellence. The settlement team assists clients with the refugee claim process, and other relevant referrals and applications.

Core Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with the Executive Director, determine organizational staffing needs
  • Actively participates in hiring, orientation, training, development, and supervision of staff for the settlement team, including student placements, with focus on developing staff members through ongoing mentoring and coaching
  • Work with the Executive Director should discipline and/or termination of staff be required
  • Identify gaps in services and make recommendations to develop programming initiatives and partnership opportunities
  • Develop, implement, and monitor effectiveness of case management and in-house programming
  • Deliver immigration counseling and assist clients with the refugee hearing process including completion of forms, gathering supporting documentation, writing support letters, and consulting with lawyers
  • Keep abreast of immigration and social service policies
  • Collaboratively with the staff team, respond to any emergencies at the shelter after hours
  • Participate in networks and coalitions within the refugee settlement sector to, advance programs and services, and advocate for refugees
  • Facilitate and contribute to weekly staff meetings, lead weekly house meetings
  • Develop, facilitate, and/or oversee new client orientation classes/workshops
  • Receive and track monthly rental payments from clients
  • As part of staff team coordinate various events for the staff, clients, and volunteers
  • Actively participate in annual fundraising events and planning
  • Participate semi-regularly in the spiritual ministries of Adam House (Bible Study and Social Night)
  • Attend meetings offsite to promote the ministry of Adam House
  • Along with all staff, ensure that clients adhere to the Adam House Code of Conduct, and appropriate action for breach of conduct, and in consultation with the Executive Director, resolve matters that require correction or eviction

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary bachelor’s degree or community college diploma focused in the area of social work, settlement work, international development or another related discipline
  • Committed Christian with a heart for people and missions
  • Committed to uphold the organization’s mission, values, and standards
  • Intercultural competency
  • Leadership skills with an aptitude for mediating interpersonal conflicts
  • Well organized, reliable, ability to multitask
  • Analytical problem-solver
  • Competency in word, excel, and internet browsers
  • Good communicator, and able to interface with the public
  • Fluency in a foreign language an asset (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Farsi, Turkish, or Russian)
  • Valid driver’s license (and vehicle) an asset

A police check is required as a condition of employment
