Position Description

St. Joseph Island Free Methodist Church (SJIFMC) is located in the center of the island, or as we like to say, in the heart of St. Joseph Island. Our motto is… “In the heart of the Island, with the Island at heart.” The Island, as it is commonly referred to by locals, is situated in the St. Mary’s River which connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron, just 40 minutes east of the city of Sault Ste. Marie, ON. One of the first Free Methodist Churches in Canada, we have over 125 years of history in the community.

Access to the island is no longer by ferry, but by a short drive over a toll-free bridge with a spectacular view. Being the second largest fresh water island in the world, the island is mostly rural, with four townships and two towns (Richards Landing & Hilton Beach).

Richards Landing is a picturesque waterfront community with a 24-hour emergency hospital, doctors building, pharmacy, grocery store, credit union, library, children’s library, elementary school (pre-K – grade 6), a private Christian School, Gardiner Marine, ice cream shop, several gift shops, marina, public beach, parks, municipal office, post office, Royal Canadian Legion, bed & breakfast, motel, campground/trailer park with laundry mat, two churches (United & Brethren), Seniors Retirement Complex, and volunteer Fire Services.

The Village of Hilton Beach is also a waterfront community. It boasts a general store, library, community hall, a restaurant, ice cream shop, campground/trailer park, marina, public beach, waterfront center, parks, resort accommodations, municipal offices for both the village and the township, post office, and two churches (United & Catholic), seasonal farmers market, and volunteer Fire Services.

Located rurally throughout the island, you will find restaurants, a seasonal Pancake House, gas, equipment rental, bakery, Timber Mart, Kentvale General Store & Home Hardware, chiropractor, marinas, trailer parks and campgrounds, rental storage facilities, museums, historic sites including the National Site Fort St. Joseph, public beaches, gardens and seasonal farmers markets, municipal office, various artisans and businesses, the Island Clippings (a local weekly newsletter), and two churches (Anglican and of course the Free Methodist), All Tribes Christian Camp, and Keewaydin Christian Centre.

Please contact Davika at The Free Methodist Church in Canada Leadership Development office via email (davika.fmcic@gmail.com) by February 15 to request a copy of the church profile and pastoral job description to prayerfully review.  Instructions about how to apply for the position will be sent with the profile.
