Position Description
Reports To: Store Manager
Status: FT Contract
Salary: $20-28/hr
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Assistant Store Manager must have strong relational qualities and be able to train volunteers to effectively operate the Mission Thrift Store. The Assistant Store Manager must reflect Christ in his/her behavior and be vibrant, passionate and have an entrepreneurial spirit. They must understand the needs and wants of a thrift store customer and be able to motivate volunteers to deliver exceptional customer service. The Assistant Store Manager must understand inventory control, pricing, separation of duties, delegation, motivation, marketing, advertising and financial management. They will work with the Store Manager to maximize production and sales floor success by modelling an excellent work ethic and promoting cleanliness in the store. The Assistant Store Manager will build and maintain relationships with other local charities and community organizations with which the Mission Thrift Store partners.
The Assistant Store Manager will report to and assist the Store Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Activities:
- Work with the Store Manager to oversee the day-to-day activities of the store
- Communicate clearly and effectively with volunteers and staff
- Monitor donated items and ensure they are ready to be sorted and priced daily
- Ensure that the sorting area is clean, clear and meets safety standards
- Delegate the workload in the donations area among volunteers and staff
- Work with the Store Manager to develop an annual evaluation to assess the donation area needs and to identify areas for improvement on an ongoing basis
- Recruit, interview and select well-qualified staff/volunteers in consultation with the Store Manager
- Communicate regularly with volunteers, staff and customers to gain community support and to solicit input to improve the store's activities
- Monitor the store’s retail production activities with monthly written reports to the Store Manager and recommend changes to enhance the store as appropriate
- Assess the needs of the cashiers and floaters to enhance program/service delivery
- Resolve any customer issues or concerns that may arise while ensuring customer satisfaction
- Assist in training, guiding, developing and motivating team members to reach and exceed their full potential
- Assist with weekly, monthly, and semi-annual ordering of supplies
- Execute effectively all duties and tasks of every store position
Secondary Activities:
- Perform daily devotions with volunteers in the absence of the Store Manager and assist in creating energizing and informative monthly staff meetings
- Participate proactively and creatively in the store’s ongoing advertising efforts
- Standing and walking for most of the day in a constrained sorting and retail space

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
Education
- Diploma in Business Administration or related field
Work Experience
- 3 – 5 years of Retail Sales and Management experience, including supervising and working with volunteers, is preferred
- Knowledge of office policies and procedures
- Experience with the non-profits/volunteer organizations
Skills
- English or French Speaking (Bilingual is a strong asset)
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to multi-task; work in a fast-paced environment with grace and good humour
- Good conflict resolution skills
- Be organized and neat
- Analytical and problem-solving skills; be able to solve problems with good judgment and make decisions independently
