Position Summary
The Lead Pastor is the primary spiritual and administrative leader of the Church. S/he is responsible for the oversight and efficacy of all ministerial work done in the service of the Church’s mission, ensuring volunteers and staff remain united in love and truth as they serve our vision and exemplify our values. The Lead Pastor is not only to ‘do’ ministry work, but to shepherd, lead and disciple others in the same, raising and mentoring spiritual leaders capable of discipling others in turn.
The Lead Pastor is also responsible for administrative oversight of all Church functions and the management of all Church staff.
Qualifications
This position requires the following:
- Education: a bachelor's degree in theology, religious studies, or divinity from an institution recognized and approved by the board of directors.
- Experience: at least 5 years in a formal ministerial role with a theologically compatible church.
- A driver’s license for personal transportation;
- Legal Standing or Clearances: a clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check

Core Competencies
- Knowledge: The Lead Pastor will have impeccable biblical and theological literacy, understanding the Scriptures in both letter and spirit. S/he will also have a firm grasp on the principles of organizational leadership, as well as understanding of Church administration.
- Skills: The Lead Pastor will be skilled in public speaking, written and verbal communication, active listening, delegation, diplomacy, performance management, conflict resolution, organization, and administration.
- Personal Characteristics: The Lead Pastor will, above all other considerations, have a personal and enduring relationship with the Lord, as will be increasingly evidenced by the fruit of the Holy Spirit (see Gal 5:22-23) in his/her spiritual walk. S/he will be a humble, trustworthy, and effective servant-leader who inspires others to action and helps maintain a positive focus without ignoring interpersonal or organizational problems that require attention. This person will be patient and consistent, understanding that real change is measured in miles, not inches.
- Personal Growth: The Lead Pastor will have a life-long attitude of the importance of continuing self-development.
Core Responsibilities
- Preaching: deepening the congregation’s knowledge of scriptural truth and exhorting them to deepen their relationships with Christ and to live in the service of the Gospel
- Prayer: routinely praying for the Church, for those within it and for our community at large, and encouraging others to do the same
- Discipling: mentoring and guiding members within our congregation to deepen in their love for Christ and to grow in Christian maturity
- Shepherding: tending to the spiritual, emotional and practical needs of those within the Church, and, where appropriate, to those outside of it
- Evangelism: sharing the truth and love of the Gospel with community members who have not yet surrendered their lives to the Lord Jesus and to fellowship in a supportive Christian community
- Liturgy: administering the sacraments (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper), presiding over weddings and funerals, and leading all appropriate forms of corporate worship
- Staff’ Management: directing the activities of all paid Church staff members, managing their performance, and helping to develop their professional growth
- Volunteer Management: directing the activities of volunteers, directly and through delegating to other Church leaders
- Advocacy: representing the Church in the community and before important stakeholders; and
- Engaging in other activities as directed by the Board of Directors and/or as necessary for the health and success of the Church
- Visitation – in hospital and home visits as required
Scope and Limits of Authority
- Direct Reports: The Lead Pastor presides over the whole staff team
- Budget: The Lead Pastor is responsible for managing the budget
- The Lead Pastor is accountable to the Board of Directors.

- A Christian Lifestyle: the individual must have a lifestyle consistent with biblical Christianity, actively abstaining from sinful or shameful behaviour including, but not necessarily limited to, theft, lying, greed, idolatry, violence, rage, fraud, slander, gossip, lawbreaking, drunkenness, divisiveness and sexual immorality.
